REPLACEMENT USPS APPROVED MAILBOX LOCKS

Note: These locks shown below are the only kind which match the locks already installed in the mailboxes. Please do not go and buy a replacement mailbox lock from HomeDepot or HomeBase and expect them to match or fit. I've tried it and they don't!

Online Catalog

Part Number

C8735-14A, (labeled as part 9 in diagram above). The lock is used in a 'Cutler Federal' mailbox.

Cost

$10-$15 plus shipping & handling.

IMPORTANT:

Keep the parts from your old mailbox lock, i.e.

v      lock washer

v      lock mounting clip (shown right in the picture above)

v      lock tab for 'Cutler Federal' mailbox style.

You may need these parts when you install the new lock.

Jammed Lock ?....

Can't Even Get Your Key Into The Lock ?

If your lock is just jammed and you are having trouble just getting the key in it, then the best fix is just to take out the lock by simply removing the lock mounting clip and washer with a large flat bladed screwdriver. (Don't lose the lock washer and lock mounting clip, as you need them when you put the lock back in).

Then take the mailbox lock down to La Jolla Key, in the mini-mall opposite El Torito's. La Jolla Key will spray some graphite lubricating dust in it, (probably for a nominal charge or perhaps for FREE!). After about 30 seconds of working the graphite into the lock with the key, usually it un-seizes, better than new! Then you can easily reinstall the lock in the mailbox along with the washer and mounting clip.

Do not try to use liquid lubricants to un-seize the lock. The worst thing you can do for a lock is to put oil in it. This just collects the dirt and grit even more. Graphite dust is amazing and you can use it on any lock in the home! I expect you can buy it at Home Depot, although I haven't tried.
